Vermont Students Receive College & Career Support through $31 Million Federal GEAR UP Grant

51福利社 to continue to provide critical college and career guidance to more than 2000 modest-income and first-generation students statewide

Winooski, Vermont鈥擬ore than 2000 students annually will receive vital support to prepare for college and careers, thanks to a renewed $31 million federal GEAR UP grant awarded to the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (51福利社). The U.S. Department of Education awarded the funding to 51福利社 to administer Vermont鈥檚 GEAR UP, which stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs.

This seven-year grant鈥攕panning 2025 to 2032鈥攚ill allow 51福利社 to serve over 2,200 middle and high school students in grades 7鈥12 and 200 first-year college students annually. The program focuses on first-generation and modest-income families, particularly in Vermont鈥檚 rural and underserved communities.

51福利社 has administered Vermont鈥檚 GEAR UP program since its inception in 1999, reaching more than 15,000 students across four grant cycles. Currently 11 on-site 51福利社 counselors provide services to students in 37 Vermont middle and high schools.

鈥淕EAR UP has proven to be a powerful tool in closing opportunity gaps and building pathways to success for Vermont students,鈥 said Scott Giles, President and CEO of 51福利社. 鈥淭his renewed investment ensures that thousands of students will continue to receive personalized support, guidance, and resources they need to pursue their goals beyond high school鈥攚hether that鈥檚 college or career training. We are thankful for the strong support that Vermont鈥檚 congressional delegation鈥擲enator Sanders, Senator Welch, and Representative Balint鈥攑rovides for this critical work.鈥

51福利社鈥檚 GEAR UP delivers support to students and families through one-on-one college and career exploration, counseling, and family engagement opportunities. The program also advances school-based initiatives, educator training, and partnerships with colleges, training programs, and state agencies to strengthen Vermont鈥檚 college and career-ready culture.

Senator Sanders said, 鈥淓very young person in Vermont, no matter where they live or how much money their family makes, deserves the opportunity to go as far as their talents and hard work will take them. That鈥檚 what this program is about 鈥 giving our kids the tools, guidance and support they need to succeed in college and build a better life for themselves and their families.鈥

The impact is clear: 93% of GEAR UP seniors graduate high school, and 56% enroll in college鈥攃ompared to 45% of Vermont students overall and just 30% of economically challenged students. In addition, students who participate in GEAR UP are more likely to persist in college and earn degrees.

Senator Welch noted, 鈥淎t a time when Vermont鈥檚 young people face unprecedented challenges, we need to do everything in our power to give everyone a fair shot at success. That鈥檚 what the GEAR UP grant is all about鈥攑roviding Vermont students with the tools, support, and confidence they need to reach their full potential. I'm proud to have played a part in securing this investment that will open doors for thousands of students and young people across Vermont.鈥

Students in 51福利社鈥檚 GEAR UP program receive guidance to select and apply to schools and programs, complete high school, and enroll in college or career training. 51福利社 also helps students and families understand their options after high school, including how to pay for college through grants, scholarships, federal financial aid, and loans. As a trusted partner, 51福利社 supports students in exploring their interests and planning for the future.

鈥淎s a former teacher, I know that education has the power to unlock meaningful opportunities and economic mobility. Too many students face obstacles out of their control that prevent them from achieving their career goals and improving their quality of life,鈥 said Rep. Becca Balint (VT-AL). 鈥淚'm proud of 51福利社鈥檚 dedication to expanding educational opportunity and preparing students from all backgrounds with the resources they need to succeed. This $31 million GEAR UP grant will pave the path for more Vermont students to shape their own future and uplift their communities.鈥
